Ian McMurchy's Pre-Rut Grouping
TI Decoys - Expert Advice
Written by Robert Suess

Buck Rubbing in Pre RutIan McMurchy is a friend of mine from Saskatchewan who has had some excellent results decoying deer during the pre-rut using multiple decoys. Ian has found a pair of decoys to be the minimum number for sure-fire results during the pre-rut although he will often use up to five decoys. He feels using a single decoy during the pre-rut tends to spook more deer than it attracts.

Key Points to help you have a successful hunt with your decoys.

  1. Use decoys only in the evening for a field set-up. Trying to slip into the field before dawn, while the deer are also in the field, will only spook the them.
  2. Arrive early enough to get the decoys set up and yourself hidden an hour or more before you expect the first deer to arrive on the scene.
  3. Maximum visibility. Set the decoys where deer can see them from as far away as possible.
  4. Use edge cover if you have to, but take advantage of any cover out in the field itself, such as sloughs, rock piles, hay bales, small patches of brush or discarded machinery for the ultimate pre-rut set-up.
  5. Bedded does are important to this set-up. Evidently the sight of deer bedded in the field, gives approaching deer the impression that this is a relaxed situation.

Take a decoy on your next hunting adventure, and let the fun begin!
