These tips will aid in better understanding decoy usage and should make your next hunt with our proven products a successful one.
- Keep your decoy as Scent Free as posible.
- Understand that All deer do not act the same. Some deer will walk right up to the decoys and some will circle the decoy, stomping and head bobbing at the decoy. Be prepared to take your first good shot, especially on old mature deer. If it is not a target animal, sit back and enjoy the show. At times it is truly Entertaining to watch the interaction of the deer to the decoy.
- Vsiblity of the decoy to approaching deer. By making your decoy visible to approaching deer, it gives the deer approaching visual conformation, especially when your rattling or calling deer. Avoid setting up the decoy where it may surprise deer. Deer will go into a sudden sense of alert or as I call it shock mode when they are surprised by a decoy.Â
- Use fresh scent! Fresh scent will make your decoy more realistic, but do not over due it. Too much scent or unfresh scent will alarm deer. I do not recommend putting the scent on your decoys. Put your scent at the base or side of the decoy or even 20 yards on each side of your stand, so if a deer circles your location he will smell the deer scent before it smells you.
- Set up your decoy upwind of your stand when possible, so if deer try to get down wind, you will get a shot before he or she smells you.
- Add movement to your decoy when possible. I have had guys tell me that they used old white cloth and or small pieces of white garbage bags and placed them on the ears of the decoys and made they felt it added realism and movement.
- Always hunt so that the wind is in your favor. If you have a location that is a good one, place several stands or blinds in that location, so regardless of the wind direction, you can still hunt your favorite spot. Be careful to avoid over hunting any particular area to keep that trophy buck guessing.
